The main purpose of the study is to find out awareness and use of 3G services among the research scholars of the University of Delhi and University of Hyderabad. The study demonstrates that research scholars do use 3G services for purposes other than communication and entertainment. Majority of respondents fall under the age group of 26-30 years and use mobile phones for both communication and leisure. Airtel is the popular 3G service provider and its users specifically engage in browsing academic/research networking sites. Availability of music and audio are the main features for purchasing new mobile phones. Broadband and ticket booking are the frequently used services and creating video games on the Internet cloud are the occasionally used 3G service. Majority of the respondents stated that 3G provides functional value by enabling them to accomplish tasks easily, more quickly, effectively, and conveniently. Interestingly, mobile phones are not used for promotion of one's own research and exchange of ideas, which is the principal issue addressed by this study. None of the respondents reported an increase in accessing subscribed library e-journals and databases. Poor network coverage is perhaps the biggest barrier that interrupts the enjoyment of using 3G services. The findings of the study will not only guide research scholars in effective use of 3G services, but also help them in awareness of new mobile phone specifications including 3G service features. In addition, it will help the university authorities and vendors in facilitating effective access of licensed library e-resources and providing a valuable reference for service providers to develop 3G mobile value-added services.Keywords

The paper attempts to investigate the usage behaviour and the related progress of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology as inferred from the opinion of the students from two libraries of academic institutions in New Delhi, viz., Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) and Indian Law Institute (ILI). It also evaluates users' ability, knowledge, reasons for effective use, as well as problems faced while using the technology vis-à-vis its impact on the academic environment.
Despite being related to two different academic backgrounds and needs, majority of the findings of the different aspects of RFID technology conjure up a similar pattern. The results clearly suggest that majority of respondents are familiar with the RFID components in the libraries under study and have a positive impact on the satisfaction of the users. The major benefits are-fast circulation transactions, multiple documents' self check-in/self check-out, user privacy, reliability, wherein reservation of books is the topmost service. The opinion of respondents clearly indicates that out of seven items, five were rated as good, and the book drop-box facility was rated as excellent. On the other hand, the study also proved that the majority of respondents were not using smart cards. One of the common problems cited was lack of information. Several literary programmes are conducted in libraries. However, the old computers take time for processing. The self-check in and self-check out stations were rated as fair because they were easy to use. The findings from this study suggest that factors such as system quality, use, and user satisfaction positively influence consumer attitudes towards RFID-enabled services. Therefore, this article aims to understand factors affecting the use of RFID systems and the related user satisfaction in a library. The findings of the study will certainly help the library to properly handle the RFID system for effective use by their students.

This paper investigates the use of Web based Online Public Access Catalogue (Web-OPAC) by the foreign students at the University of Delhi and enquires into their ability, knowledge, reasons for effective use, as well as problems faced while using the Web-OPAC.
The results indicate that a majority of foreign students come from developing countries and had not used Web-OPAC prior to coming to the University of Delhi. Most of the respondents used the Delhi University Library System (DULS) OPAC to find book titles only. The most popular search type is the title search and is also the first choice. The survey results show that the known item searches are more popular than the unknown item searches. Journal titles search, check borrower information, find articles, conference papers, for renewals of items borrowed, etc., features are unknown in existing DULS OPAC.The interface of DULS OPAC was too old and unattractive. Language is the most obvious difficulty faced by foreign students while searching the Web-OPAC. Most of the students had not received any training or learnt it from the library and for those who attended the training programme, a majority of them noted that it was successful. Most of the students are generally unaware of other facilities that are available in the OPAC. The paper focusses on many aspects of Web-OPAC, particularly those used by the foreign students at the University of Delhi. The findings of the study will certainly help the other university libraries in India to plan their Web-OPAC for effective use by their foreign students.
